Grade Course Description
9-12

                          

                           High School Band I

Band I is an introductory course for those students with limited experience with musical instruments but are interested in learning a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. The class will have a minimum of one performance per semester.

                          High School Band II & III

The purpose of this course is to continue the nurture, development, and growth of the Band II student through the art of instrumental music. Band II (Intermediate) & III (Advanced) is for students that have successfully completed Band I or its equivalent. The class will have a minimum of one performance per semester.

                                High School Guitar I

Guitar is a continuation of the beginning class and builds on the theory and techniques learned in the prerequisite class. The students in this class are required to perform at concerts at least four times in the school year. The literature consists of original compositions, classical solos, and multiple part songs performed in large groups.

                High School Advanced Guitar


This is an advanced guitar class expecting the student to possess beginning technical, theoretical and performance skills including knowledge of: 1) common chord fingerings, 2) first position scale, 3) simple rhythmic figures, 4) barre chord theory and practice, 5) tablature, 6) flat picking, 7) major scales, 8) application of a movable scale to the fifth position, 9) understanding of the relationship between scales and key signatures, 10) locating notes on the full fretboard, and 11) accompaniment forms using varied rhythm strums and arpeggios. Participants will focus on improving/expanding skills in all areas of playing including right and left hand technique, rhythm (sixteenth, dotted notes, syncopation, triplets), solo and ensemble literature, fretboard knowledge (2nd, 5th, 7th positions) and music theory. Students will reflect/analyze on their own performances, as well as reflect/analyze performances by prominent performers of various styles and time periods. The class will culminate in a yearly recital of both ensemble and solo pieces. (Repeat Credit)

              High School Digital Music Production

This course will teach students the basics of digital music production covering how to use a Digital Audio Workstation, record and edit audio, record and edit MIDI, use a MIDI controller, write about music, understand basic music notation, and learn industry specific language.
